Stern Gland Grease ?

Looking for some info/help...........


1) what is the correct grease to use in a stern gland ?

2) Is Castrol LM grease ok to use ? ( was told by a boat/engine surveyor it was ok ??? )

3) Is Castrol CL grease ok to use ?

Many chandlers sell stern-gland grease. It needs to be a water resistant type. Ordinary vehicle bearing grease is not really suitable.

Ramonol grease is many people's preferred product.

Castrol CL is calcium based.
Although it has some waterproof properties.
I would not use it on my sterngland
LM is a high melting point grease which is lithium based.
Ideal for wheel bearings etc
I use Ramonol as per Skysail.

Some of the 'tradtional' packing was /is impregnated with graphite
Some peeps use a graphite type grease in that case
Teflon is used as well these days
However I reckon any marine type waterproof grease will do.

Are you re- packing or do you have a prob with the gland?

No, just want to know if the grease I am using is ok, using LM grease

No copper in LM as far as I know

Get in touch with these people for the real stuff as used by the big boys, they have everything you will ever need and are willing to sell small lots 5 ltrs big for us but will last for ages and you even have enough to give a bit away occasionally.

I use some stuff made by Morris but I sometimes wonder if it really matters what is used (in the low power installation most of us have). If the sterntube greaser is used regularly, it isn't going to be there for very long, is it?
