Please help ! I know its simple but i am a tad confused !

22ft long keeler..beta diesel..

I have a newly packed stern gland which is leaking. It's a new engine , python drive , prop and shaft..2 hrs run. Pours out , 2 drips a second.....I can hand tighten to make it stop but once the engine runs it all becomes loose again.

Simple set up ...gland nut and smaller lock nut. grease reservoir..

I can move the lock nut aft...then move the gland nut aft....then tighten the lock nut fwd....drips once a minute ...perfect..

run the engine ...all becomes loose..

The gland nut contains the packing...which appears tight...if i turn it the prop rotates as well..If i hold the prop the gland will move ok around the shaft albeit tightly...

Does the prop rotate inside the gland nut when the engine is in drive ?

Is it supposed to tighten over the thread or just butt up against the lock nut..and therefore rotate against it ?

Any advice is most appreciated!

The gland nut should not rotate when the shaft turns if this is what you are asking.
Are you saying the gland packing is rotating with the shaft rotation? If so, then it could be that the gland packing is a size too small.
I hope this helps, but I'm not sure if I have understood your situation correctly.

Tightening the lock nut up against the gland nut should stop the gland nut from rotating when the shaft is turning. You should see about a drip per second when motoring and be dry when stopped. The gland nut should go over the thread on the shaft log.

As fas "pouring" out goes, I had a continual stream running out last weekend, not just a few drips!

So the gland nut is moved and threads aft ....the lock nut threads fwd to tighten up against it and only the prop rotates ..?

drips and grease to keep it lubricated and cool and it shouldnt get hot and only the prop rotates ?

If this is the case I think what has happened is that the gland nut has worked its way loose and has slid of the thread and moved fwd up the prop

Thanks for the reply..

Please correct me if i am wrong ! Hope this is clear ..

The gland nut and lock nut have worked loose...The lock nut is threaded on and can be moved aft and fwd. The gland nut or packing nut has moved up the prop can be moved albeit tightly up and down the shaft but is not threaded on..

Should i move the lock nut aft and thread the packing nut aft and then move the lock nut fwd to lock it in place..?

At the moment the packing nut is spinning with the prop ! It is starting to appear that the lock nut and packing nut are stationary and the propshaft rotates only !
