Ok so I had an old Manecraft Deep Sea seal on my boat and now the shaft is being replaced I wondered if technology has come on a little. You can see the stern tube on this photo if it makes any difference?

Any suggestions? Shaft is 1 1/2" driven by an 80HP Perkins via an Aquadrive.

I fitted a Volvo seal on a 30mm shaft 6 years ago. It's never leaked a drop in 700 hours. Zero maintenance, quite reasonably priced and easy to fit. You would need to check the stern tube and shaft diameter were suitable. I presume that's not the new shaft.

A couple of fairly exhaustive recent threads on this, northcave (maybe they could appear as flashbacks in your epic movie ;))
Lots of good experience with the two pvb mentions above, but they're available in a relatively small range of sizes. PSS also well-regarded, but significantly pricier.

Yeah loads of info on Cox's site but seems odd why people would spend that amount on a PSS when the volvo ones seem to get such a good review generally.

I have fitted a PSS because the stern tube to shaft dimension weren't right for a Volvo. Also I have wear in the shaft and the PSS doesn't bear on the shaft so that saved me a new shaft. I replaced a Tides and Coxs website has my comments about them.

In your case with a new shaft I would have a Volvo too, assuming you don't intend keeping the boat on a drying mooring. Problems can arise if the shaft is pitted or scratched, and as macd says, provided there is one to fit your shaft and stern tube dimensions.

Given that I have a hose on my deep sea version then the Radice version as refer to above might be a decent option. I can't seem to find them online though. Might it go under different name?

No but when we do our major trip next year I will be using my beaching legs.

PSS from Lake engineering or Aquafax?
+1 (or should I say 2).

The two PSS I have just replaced were in rag order, and likely 20 + years old but not a droplet leaked in through either. Replaced due to cutlass replacement.

Not cheap, but then boating is not cheap, and the stern seal is one item I want 100% confidence in, and I have had a Volvo Blackjack leak, requiring an emergency haul out, plus they work by directly rubbing their labia like lips against the valuable shaft surface. The PSS has its own stator and rotor.

Just some feedback here. I have been round and round on this one comparing Tides Sureseal, Volvo, Volvo with waterfeed, PSS etc. I eventually came via these guys that:

A. produce a Volvo Radice type (waterfed) in more sizes that anyone else include 1.5" +
B: produce what is like a PSS but with better materials. Pricing is about 20% more than a normal PSS.

I can't vouch for it yet but I'm going to use their ERCE type which is like PSS. Apparently has carbin seals and outlasts most others without wear to the shaft. I'll let you know how it goes.

It looks so much like a PSS in the smaller sizes that I would be hard pressed to tell them apart, except that the bellows design looks slightly less robust. Not sure where the 'better materials' comes in. The only critical component is the graphite seal and my previous experience of trying to get any mechanical seal manufacturer to provide a specification has shown that you get what you are given.

Haven't got much to compare against but it arrived today from France and given I ordered it yesterday around 3pm that's not bad service. Quality seems good and the rubber has a kind of fabric over the top. All seems machines very well.

Came in at a fraction over what the PSS's are selling for on ASAP. A lot less than a Tides Sureseal.
