We have the alternator to battery charger (the one that does not rely on you modifying the alternator). We have had the same 'interesting' experience with Mr Sterling, however his advice was the only one which, in practice, was correct and he was quite.... amusing....
The unit itself has been struck by lightning, given a reasonable dousing with diesel and water, had four years of cruising in the tropics and is still 100%, so I'm not going to complain.
