Sterling alternator regulator

Sterling Alternator Regulators

I've had two successful self-installations, first on 2020 Volvo and then on 2030 Volvo.
No problems at all with either boat, and using open flooded lead-acid batteries is so useful as each cell can be measured for Sp Gravity with a hydrometer.
I have to say the instructions need to be carefully perused and not just once either!
Charles Sterling was helpful by email and for the outlay the gear is great. I do mount the units where I can see the action easily, and have not used the extra readout panels at all.
I plan to add, if possible, a heat sensor to all of the batteries, as I had a problem with one battery shorting a cell and causing great fuss amongst the others.(dangerous level of heat, acrid smell ).The high charge levels obtained make life aboard much easier, less engine running, and with solar panels as well, life has improved greatly!

Good sailing and boating to all!

I've had them (sterling) since 1999 . The original was fine, but I'm chasing a VERY intermittant redlight/battery overvoltage problem like VivCox described, and have been, since changing to the digital version and upgrading the alternator in 2006.( too many changes at once?)
Anyone else out there got anything to add?
I should say that I was in Email contact with Charles a while ago and was satisfied with his attention/response but still have an occasional check.
It's difficult for a product manufacturer/designer to give remote assistance when the customer environment is so variable.
In spite of my problems (and I think they will turn out to be mine....) I believe the smart regulator is a good product.
