I've just removed one of these from my boat where it has languished, , disconnected for some time by the looks of it. Nice and clean inside.
What does it actually do? Is it useful?
Anyone able to describe how it works?
I assume the revious owner left it because it was still serviceable, he left no u/s gear fitted, but does anyone know how to bench test it?

Finally is it something that would sell - is it worth my time trying to test it - I hate binning useful kit.

It works by changing the field current in the alternator to increase the output voltage. It can be useful; on older alternators it can increase the charge voltage to increase the charge current, it can also compensate for voltage losses caused by diode blockers.

I don't think it's worth trying to bench test it. And if you don't know whether it works it'll be tricky to sell it. If your alternator charging is satisfactory, probably best to bin it.

Put it on Ebay. Should probably be described as "Spares or Repair " then carefully explain it's history and that you are unable to test it. You will probably get £20
