Sterling 10 amp charger ?

Re: Yikes!

If your old Sterling charger had been working properly in 4-step mode, it would surely have dropped the voltage down to a float level and wouldn't have "boiled" your batteries. So it's probably fair to assume it wasn't working properly. I'd suggest you get it checked out by Sterling or, after 12 years use, it might be worth just replacing it. If you get another Sterling charger, check the battery voltage at various stages in the charging process, to make sure it's working correctly.

Delphi maintenance-free batteries are very resistant to overcharge, but can't be refilled easily.

Re: Yikes!

pvb. thanks for that. I am looking to spend up to £200 ish have you heard anything about Victron VICTRON CENTAUR BATTERY CHARGER 12V 20A chargers?

Re: Yikes!

I have a Victron 12 V. 20 A since nearly 20 years, permanently charging my batteries.
Never had any sort of problem with it nor with the batteries (overload, etc.)
One reservation thought : it has a very poor cos phi, thus needs a really powerfull generator if you want to charge the batteries whilst at anchor. My old Honda 500 W for instance is not up to this particular job.
The newer model - Centaur e.g. - should be better.

Hope this helps.
