I have had to buy new horseshoe lifebouys and now need to put the boat name on each. I guess I need a couple of stensils

I seem to recall a forumnite does boat names, but cannot find him on searching. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Go to an old-fashioned car accessory shop & buy the little sticky letters that used too be used for trailer number plates. Their use for reg plates is illegal now but many places still have them for other purposes - like boat names on lifebouys.

Make your own?

Not difficult, use the fonts available on your PC to write the boat name in the size and style you want - one letter at a time if it needs to be big. Then either print onto light card or onto paper and trace onto card. A bit of patience, a sharp craft knife and the job's done.

I've made a few stencils just using Adobe Photoshop and a stanley knife. Just choose a nice font, blow it up as big as you like, print it out, then cut out the letters and throw them away. If it's a particulary big one, I use label paper so I can stick it down before spray painting, otherwise the paper tends to curl up and the letters aren't so sharp.

B and Q do them to..

We used to cut our own stencils on board ship and taylor them to the lifebuoy. We would use old charts.

Blimey, he starts enough 'today I thort a thort' threads to get free advertising from YBW, I am amazed you missed him in a search.

I cut mine from some left over acrylic and glued them on with impact adhesive. Still there with no frayed corners since 2004.

I bought stick on letters from the chandlery - amazingly the letters are still there after some years.

Big advantage of having a short name!

I'm looking for some vinyl letters for my boat name, here's cheap, and for fun or if you have money to burn (think private registration plates), have a quick game of what's the most money I can spend on my boat name here...

Edit: Just managed £180 for 6 x 100mm letters, ouch...

Any competent vinyl sign cutter will do you a stencil, apparently they are used a lot in conservation areas where painted signs are a must and proper sign writers are in short supply, trouble is they are a one use item.

I bought a kids stencil set (Crayola IIRC) and a permanent marker pen, easy and cheap, practise before you start as my efforts got better as I went along, by the time I'd done the eighth item I was getting quite good at it.
