Re: Steiner Bino\'s on ebay

Steiner binoculars are superb, and I've had the Commander 7x50 for many years with total satisfaction. The Navigator binoculars on eBay however are the old-style model and are rather bigger (in terms of length) than the Commander and current Navigator, and may not be as easy to use. I find the compactness of the Commander is a good feature, which gives great balance. Could be worth going for the ones on eBay, but how much is a personal choice.

These Steiner binoculars look OK Steiner ebay listing I've always thought Steiner were the best what does anyone else think?

[/ QUOTE ] In addition to these, there are 4 pairs of Steiner Navigator and 8 pairs of Steiner Commander binoculars on ebay. The seller of the pair to which savageseadog draws attention (larchwood1) states "I have retired and my business is closed down, I don't know why I still have these perhaps it was too expensive for the purchaser of my shop to want for stock, anyway they were made in 2003 and carry a 30 year warranty from that date." He may have sold his shop, but if look at his trading history and other items for sale, it is clear that he is still a trader in sporting goods.

There wouldn't be any connection between savageseadog and larchwood1, would there? Covert advertising? Never!

Re: Steiner Bino\'s on ebay

They are mine, and savageseadog is really my love child, (or possibly not). But since he's been so kind I will offer my thoughts.

Regarding which is best Commander or these Navigator Pros it's about personal choice. With the Nav Pro the compass is only visible when you press the button, lots of people prefer this, the Nav Pro is much lighter than shorter Commander. A shorter bino does help avoid shake at sea, but the Nav Pro is in this regard no different from almost every other marine bino except the Commander. Oh and I almost forgot, the Pro doesn't have the range/height graticule which some might see as a disadvantage, but many, perhaps many more, find a positive thing since, like the compass only being in view with the button pressed, it maintains a clearer view. Not that I have anything against the Commanders, I own one.

The current Steiner Navigator is of course a much cheaper animal than either a Commander or the Navigator Pro's I've offered.

In another life I once wrote a little something about marine binoculars and it can (amazingly) still be read here - http://www.allgadgets.co.uk/olm/marine-binoculars.htm

These days I am retired and having moved from farm to cottage I am now moving from Cottage to Apartment so I need to move this stuff. Needed to move it a while back but the pressure is on now. These days I broadcast a bit on the radio and have bought a motor sailer currently having a new deck in Cornwall.

Pip Pip!

umm, I'm not big on emoticons, I'll get out my signal recognition almanac....

Ah Ha! My teacher always said smirking was most unattractive.

Re: Steiner Bino\'s on ebay

I bought Steiners 2 yrs ago, very good, but I would agree that the inbuilt compass I could do without, probably a problem with all this type. I find that if you are wearing a Musto peaked hat that the peak shades the light input to compass
