My son has sort of taken over the 22'0" Mako with twin 85hp 2 stroke outboards. He uses it more than I do.

HOWEVER I apparently am left (as paymaster) with the bills.

But payment will not happen in this instance.

He wants to replace the black steering wheel with a stainless steel one with a turning knob, something like this.
SCHMITT MARINE STEERING 13.5 Destroyer Wheel with Control Knob | West Marine
or
Amazon.com : Hoffen 13.5 Inch Stainless Steel Boat Steering Wheel Destroyer Style 5-Spokes with Center Cap and Turning Knob for Seastar and Verado : Sports & Outdoors

Why a knob?
Well because the stainless steel get coated in oil, suntan oil/lotion, skin oils etc and slips which makes the need for a knob.

I think it looks crass, chav like, pretentious and ugly.

How do I dissuade him?

For coming alongside a knob would be great , but it also allows an element of hooliganism as you can turn lock to lock so much faster.

I'm curious why some like knobs? My little outboard centre consol is a complete knob to control at slow speed coming along side. A knob would give me much faster steering response. But underway what use is a knob when going cruising ?

It's the first thing I removed from my boat when I bought it! I can see the use for quick turns but really didn't like the look of it.
