If that is the case repeated soaking with penetration oil over a couple of days might help.

Else you may have to remove it bit by bit or even take out the hinge tube (engine will come off) and remove/replace the lot.

Thanks guys - so does this mean its not likely to be the 'compacted grease' problem? - I was getting optimistic at that point, but I reckon I'm gonna have to concede defeat and send it to the shop!!!

Thanks Harry - which way do I hammer it out??? (plus I presume you mean 'drill' rather than 'drift' - what are we drilling? (if not, what is a drift)

You have to hit it with a hammer. The bit that is sticking out and then use a bolt or something roughly the same diameter (drift) and keep on hitting and it will come out. There is nothing in there to stop it only compacted grease. As I said earlier it's quite common only last week somebody asked me the same question. I hammered it in level and left him to finish it off himself as I was going off to play golf.
