I just got a report that tells me the Stearn headsail reefing gear on my Moody 333 is obsolete and has corrosion at both ends of the extrusion. It seemed to be working OK in November but evidently it will fail. They are talking arms and legs to replace it.

Does anyone have any ideas, spare parts, experience?

Thanks

I did find a website for a company in the states that stocks spares for the dynafurl (try a google search for "dynafurl"). That said, if the extrusion is corroding there is not a lot you can do. I can't imagine that it would be economical to replace it.

Sorry to say that you're probably best off replacing it.

I had the solid aluminium Stearn extrusion on my Sadler 29(1983)
One of the top integral bolts sheered off in the middle of the N Sea in a F6. Luckily we had an emergency forestay as well as the baby stay and we were able to save the mast etc.

I recall that Selden/ Kemp Masts (or their predecessors ) kept spare parts when they used to be based at Lymington. Their latest telephone number is 01489 984000.

They did not seem surpised about the product failure and gave me a free replacement part.

Start again!

Nigel has had a lot to do with these units over the years and he should be able to give sound advice.

The American Website that sells all the Stearn spares is

www.RigRite.com

Prices are expensive but its worth a read if only to justify the cost of buying a completely new system

Good luck
