Steaming light?

Quite. As far as being a means of friendly information exchange between people who supposedly all enjoy the same pastime is concerned, I think this forum has something of a death wish at times!

+1

I inhabit a couple of different forums - motorbike forums and several musician's forums and I have to say that the sailing ones are by far the least welcoming (embarrassingly so). perhaps sailing attracts a lot of people who are unable to see other points of view, display empathy or often common courtesy......

It's all a bit sad really is'nt it.In trying to understand it I think it boils down to a sort of insecurity complex.People who don't have much faith in their own ability seem to need to put others down,I suppose it makes them feel good about themselves.

>you will be delighted to hear that I don't have any

Well Jane and I have a dinghy sailing certificate and have sailed over 10,000 miles in our boat and 2,500 in charter boats before we went long distance sailing. You don't need certificates you just need to read sailing books, Colregs, a navigation book, boat maintenance book etc and get on with it.

I agree entirely. There is nothing wrong with paper qualifications but there is no substitute for doing things yourself & learning by your own mistakes.
I think it was the founder of America what's his name Franklin who said something like protect all the people from making their own mistakes & you end up with a Nation of idiots :)

I'm not the only one that spotted the troll then? Amazing how someone can have made over 5250 posts and yet still know so little. My troll alarm went off almost instantly! KC is either a troll or a genuinely stupid person, let's hope for his sake that he is the former. Entertaining though.

Your another idiot then I'm afraid. There is obviously something about people like you that makes you afraid of people that do it their way

I'm sure she was a lovely girl even though her father was obviously as daft as a brush & your judgement was impeccable! :D

Oh, KC, you are awful, but I like you!!. When I read the original post, I thought it was a wind up. You could well be a "troll", but then having seen numpties in boats putting themselves and others in danger I started to wonder. If you were that type, what surprised me was the fact that you came on to this forum to ask a question that could have been answered in about 5 seconds on t'internet.

Sorry I let my guard down for a minute & thought I was among friends.

Between you & I I also think half the questions asked on here are bonkers but I do resist the urge to rant (most of the time) :D

As the 1st gullible to bite the OP's bait I now realise the error of my ways. I should, of course, have advised that all the lights were wired together thus making the switchboard connections simple and ensuring that the OP's boat was at its most visible. To add value to this approach a recording of Frank S's "My Way" could be played at loud volume to further indicate the Op's non-conformist attitudes.

I'm going off in my boat in a minute for 2/3 even four days who knows so I'm afraid I must tear myself away from this riveting conversation.
Please try to resist the urge to strangle each other in my absence :D

Years ago, my girlfriend's Dad asked me what the orange light was on the instrument panel of his car. I told him it was the oil light and asked him why. He said it had been on all the way home from work and said "Is it important?" The two other blokes in the room and I exchanged glances, rolled our eyes and shook our heads.

When we were teenagers and all took our driving tests, one lad in my class ha a base model Marina. He seized the engine one day and, on cross examination, said that there HAD been a warning light on for a while, but didn't know what it was and assumed it wouldn't be anything serious. One of the other lads looked a bit scornful and said "It's a bottom-of-the-range Marina FFS, it was hardly likely to be an ashtray-full warning light, was it?!".

it caused some amusement / embarrassment at the time (depending on whose side you were on), but the thing is, most of us can fine SOMETHING that we think EVERYONE ought to know by now. How we handle those that don't says a lot about us, I think.

If you have a VHF - don't you need an appropriate license to use it as a legal requirement? Genuine question not designed to stir
