Steaming/deck light - recommendations?

My boat has one of those AquaSignal T25 steaming/deck lights where there is no lens on the steaming light, so that the bulb and its holder are exposed to the elements. I have never been happy with this arrangement and now that the plastic in front of the steaming light is in poor condition I want to replace the whole thing with something better, i.e. waterproof.

Any recommendations, please? It must be a combined unit because it is powered via a 3-core cable.

You could use a series 41 , it uses a sealed beam unit for the deck light. http://www.aquasignal.info/ecat/htd...=1&subcategory_id=1&product_id=49&item_id=372
 
The series 41 has a small plastic fresnel lens for the decklight. The rim to this little perisher develops hairline cracks...then the lens falls out.:eek:...the trick is to secure the lens with a bead of evostick round the edge and allowing it ito cure thoroughly before mounting.
 
,,,,and I have just remembered...the bulb must not be handled with bare fingers. It destroys its life. Always use a cloth or similar to handle it.:eek:

That does not seem very good for something costing more than £150 :eek:
 
The original poster mentioned having a series 25 combined light.

Force4 have their own light which (when I visited the store last week) they say has the same mounting holes as the series 25, looks the same... but has a lens over the deck light. The backing appears to be a flexible plastic that would fit any section of mast.

Perhaps worth a check.

That looks exactly very much like the one I have now.

I could buy a few of those for the price of the AquaSignal 41.

It looks the same again - worth a call to see if the mounting holes really are the same as the series 25.. .. Let us know.

PS - I ended up just replacing my deck light bulb - it was easy with no lens to remove first!

Next time I am down that way I will go and have a look at it. They are Chinese-made (what isn't?) by AAA World-wide Enterprises but when I googled the website I got a warning that it was an 'attack site'!

I agree it looks like it shouldn't work but the one on my mast is at least 10 years old and has not yet failed. [rhetorical]How old is yours, and does it still work?

You've got a very good point there - I've no idea how old the light was when I bought the boat and I have owned her for 14 years! And the light does work, the only real problem is that the lens in the steaming light has become 'frosted'.

If I buy another the same, and it lasts that long, it will 'see me out'! :D
 
We have one AS25 steaming/deck light. The lens got cloudy, so we took the new lens off a new fixture and just put it on the old black housing. The housing is 25 years old. Both lights still work after fixing the wiring, which has to go into tiny little holes inside the housing. Never sailed in a place where the spray got up that high.

Did the same for the stern light.

Replaced the whole fixture at the bow 'cuz water got in there and froze the screws.
 
All this has made me change my mind so that I may as well stick with the basic type with the unshielded decklight, either the AquaSignal 25 or else buy an AAA cheapo from Marine Superstore.

By the way, does anyone know where I could buy a new lens for my existing AquaSignal 25? Preferably ex-stock?
 
I believe that spares are often rather long delivery, and nearly as expensive as a complete unit.
You might find it sensible to buy a new stern or masthead light for ~£17 and transfer the lens, which is the same moulding IIRC. The viewing angle is controlled by metal shields.
Perhaps point out that the cheapo deck light is 10w, against 20w for the Aquasignal. If it has a lens, maybe that's the reason since it runs cooler.
