Stealing Crew

I believe it does still go on.

In olden times it was known as the press. These days it it usually referred to as skullduggery and attempts to retain crew are often accompanied by much harumphing and high dudgeon.

A lady crew member left another boat skippered by a female to join us. The Lady skipper was not happy about this at all. Shortly after my new crew's car was keyed on race day, we had our suspicions. The lady skipper was officer of the day for the race the following week. As we crossed the finishing line I half jokingly suggested we take a note of the elapsed time. Sure enough when I saw the results, our time had been tampered with. The lady skipper was never seen again, I think she was asked to resign.

ye know, ahm nae sure yer richt, yer holiness. fer example the oban press does'nae describe a crazed capt orra ship o' the line searching fer crew in oban ...

och no, the press is where you keep yer vittals cold if ye've nae goat a deep freeze on yer boat. not that y'd be needing wan o' thon up there

Like love and war, it's all fair game, provided that you observe certain niceties:

1. No gloating - deprived skipper's bitter complaints should be met with an innocent reply ("you're surely not accusing me of poaching, are you?" with the raise of an eyebrow and the body language of a person who doesn't concern themself with sort of trivia beloved of the tabloid press).

2. SWMBO's best friend is not to be invited unless SWMBO is also on board.

3. Any crew attached to the Commodore, or other Flag Officers (including, ahem, the Rear Commodore) are out of bounds.

4. Should the Moorings Officer/Chairman of the Moorings Committee ever be short of a crew, say "Well, I may be able to help out - my boat is out of commission for replacement of her bumkin woozle-wanger stay. You wouldn't want me or my crew would you?"

5. Recently poached crew must be offered extra rations to help them over their crisis of conscience, and on no account be shouted at.
