Anyone suggest where I might obtain a recon. starter motor or a discounted new one for Yanmar !GM10?
Mine doesnt seem to have the torque or speed to start a cold engine till Ive had many attempts but is fine when the engine is warmed up. Even tried batteries in parallel but still slow starting. Starter is 15 years old.
Many thanks for good advice.

I would be looking at the electrical side first: Are batteries definately good and fully charged? ; all electrical connections?. I would put a meter across the starter terminals and observe the voltage while cranking....would expect to see at least 10v, if much lower either batteries are gone or there's a high resistance somewhere. 15yrs is nothing for a starter!

There's a guy in Lanarkshire who knocks them out for £90 including delivery. Ebay item number 150165602413 for example. I have one of his starting my engine very effectively at the moment; I don't know where he sources them but an overhaul at LSUK is about £140 and a new one form a Yanmar dealer is about £200 so it's a very good deal.

I took mine to a local auto electrical engineer who rewound it for a fraction of the new cost.
At least, he said it was a rewind, how would I know?
Anyway it worked fine afterwards.

I took the starter off my 15yr old 2GM20 and cleaned the rust off the Bendix shaft plus WD40 .
Then gave it 12volts with a screwdriver and it span rapidly.
After 15 yrs there must be some corrosion on yours.

Many thanks for your ideas. I took the starter to an auto electrician this morning and they found it to be nearly mint: brushes etc all good. Gave it a load test. Fine in all respects. I put it back on having sanded the Yanmar paint off the starter flange where where one of the two fixing bolts goes thro; this one holds an earth lead. I put voltmeter across battery to observe the voltage drop on cranking. It fell to around 10v and yo! Ho! HO! the engine instantly fired from cold! Perhaps this was the problem - poor earth. I however yesterday put thinner engine oil in (5 -30) in an attempt to reduce the drag on the starter during the first starting. Tom. Tomorrow may be a different day but its fingers crossed for an instant cold start.
