Is the clicking coming from the solenoid, if so batteries could be flat or it is stuck. A light tap on the solenoid may help but probably batteries.

Almost bound to be power source. Even if showing 12v that may not be enough amps.

Certainly unreliable. I had one on an MG TC, and it needed "encouragement" from time to time!

I used to spanner for an up and coming side car racer. It used an SU electric pump to pump petrol from the platform tank to the Amal carbs. We used a Morris Minor one, iirc it was long pull, short push, the Amals didnt like it the other way. We had driven hundreds of miles overnight to Croft Circuit, a national meet. It decided to play games, it was a Saturday morning, garages were closing at 12 noon. We got lucky, found a BL dealer and got it fitted just in time. We won the race, Gary Bryans first national win!
