Starter Motor trouble

I've just fitted a 'reconditioned' 1GM10 but the starter is not turning. I've stripped it down and it's got 3 brushes one of which is not connected. I suspect it should be but I'm not used to an odd number of brushes. The position where the 4th might be is where the brush ring is connected to the starter solenoid. Do I reconnect the third bush to one of the magnets to get it working?

The workshop manual I have downloaded is no help. It shows only two brushes.

It may be sensible if no specific help is forthcoming to take it to an automobile electrician who will be able to examine test and repair as necessary

Take it back to whence one purchased it and have them repair or replace forthwith.

Oh bugger - there goes any warranty you might have had! - take it to an outo electrician for repair (more beer tokens) or buy another reconditioned one - (even more money)

I recently used these guys www.burghfieldstarterandalternatorcentre.co.uk - very good and a good price. Another place I'd been to said my starter was kapput, £600 for a new one. These guys stripped and tested it for me, gave it the clean bill of health for £80. They know their stuff so I'd highly recommend them as good guys.

eBay purchase so not sure about a warranty although it was from a registered engine dealer! Thank you for links, might take to a garage or put it back together then take it back.

I also tried the manual but not sufficient detail of the motor, anybody else any ideas?

No dont take it to a garage.

They dont repair things like this .... they just replace with a new one!

Find an autoelectrician whose business is repairing these things

It looks in a right mess in that picture. Definitely a job for the right guys* ... but even possibly beyond repair.

*Curd Bros if your travels take you to the Tunbridge Wells area.

If the rest of the recon is as good as the starter, I would be "talking" to the recon artists

I would be back on to the seller,send that pic to him and threaten them with ebay and paypal!
That starter is in terrible shape! I could fix it and so could any half tidy reconditioner BUT what is the rest of the engine like?

Dont understand what you mean by magnets. Surely its not a permanent magnet motor. Anyway how can you connect a brush to a magnet?

If the starter is in that condition I would imagine the engine has not been tested.

Bin thinking. ITYWF that there must be the same number of negative brushes as there are positive brushes . This means there should be an even number. My guess is that not only do you have one disconnected but that there is also one missing.

It's a mess. My fear is that the rest of the engine is in a similar state!

Success. After a bit of advice from startermotorman.co.uk in Portsmouth I found out that an even number of brushes is not necessarily the case. He was not hopeful of repair but after 1.5hrs in the garden enjoying the sunshine with some emery paper and a toothbrush it is working! Not the prettiest on the outside but actually cleaned up quite well internally. I hope the rest of the engine does not need a rebuild!
