Starter motor sticking

Couple of occasions last season ,had to remove the starter motor (yanmar 3gm30) as the piston had stuck. I sprayed it liberally with WD40 ,and cleaned with a bit of emery paper,but this didn't stop it sticking again (after about 4 weeks of non use). Should I grease the piston ,or is this likely to cause it to gum up big style?

I dont think it should be greased but it might be worth a trying a thin smear of a light grease but dont use a heavy one I wonder if a very thorough cleaning and a coat of a rust remover /converter would help.

I had this problem once. I fiddled with it for ages then had the unit rebuilt at an auto electrical shop. The cost was very modest, and it was perfect thereafter.

From memory the 3gm is a pre-engaged starter ?. If so it is very unlikely to be sticking is more likely to be the solenoid intermittent i.e. nothing happens or if it clicks but will not crank, corroded solenoid contacts or a dead spot on the commutator. If it is a inerta starter do not oil or grease the shaft as any muck will stick to it and make it worse, just make sure it is clean. As has been said the best thing is to take it to a auto electrician for a check over.

Try a silicone spray, grease might attract dust / sand.
