Any suggestions for a good place to get the starter motor for my Volvo 2001 serviced - it's getting a bit noisy/clattery.

The boat is in Southampton and I'm based near Farnborough/Camberley.

Thanks,

Ed

dont take it to a "marine" place - we used a small auto repair shop £30 for a full clean up and servie.

Just in case you are thinking of doing it yourself. You have to be very careful. Its almost impossible to unsolder the wires off the pre engager. and there is a round wire ring that fits in a cup washer on the shaft, (a round wire circlip) I found this impossible to refit and used 2 C type clips. If you do take it into a refurbishers, could you ask them how they refit it.
The thing that seems to be the main fault is that the pre engager does not engage and as stated before that bit is very hard to dismantle. If your boat is a diesel it may pay you to carry a spare, as turning them over by hand is a bit of a mission.
When I took mine apart I did not find anything wrong but it worked afterwards, I assume that it just wanted an oil mist sprayed in. You could try auto and general in or rather on the Millbrook road, in Southampton.
