Hi Everyone,

As the season has gone on my Volvo 2002 has gone from being great at starting to turning over very, very slowly. So much so that if you listen to it you'd swear the battery was running flat.

It can take a few attempts and easily takes around a minute or two of turning. When it does start going it's whirring very slowly, then faster, faster (bit of a cough), silent prayers, whirs faster, faster still then life as it rumbles alive. Bit of grey smoke as it coughs out some unspent fuel then it's right as rain.

I rewired everything at the start of the season and know I have good clean connections to the battery I also know the 110ah starter is in top condition so it's not that. There's no smoke underway so I assume the engine is basically sound.

This leads me to believe it's the starter motor that's the problem here. In the experience of the panel does this sound familiar?

Does anyone have any recommendations as to places that can refurb starter motors on the East coast?

Many thanks

Sounds familiar.

Assuming you have cleaned up all the contacts and not losing energy heating up bits of corrosion then it is time to face the starter change.

By the time you have looked and got to the starter motor then you might as well replace it - well that was the situation on our 2003.

These people were excellent, helpful and made sure i got the right started for my series

Starter motors and alternators can quickly (and reasonably 'cheaply') be fixed by an automotive electricians of the type than can be found in most towns, usually somewhere near where all the car main dealers are.

These guys were very good. They didn't do the work but farmed it out. End result it looked like new.
They also checked out my alternator. They could have told me I needed a new one but returned it as working well and made no charge. All in all, 10/10. I went to the Sudbury branch.

+1
Rewound my starter motor for a fraction of the cost of a new one.
He has fixed my car electrics for me too.
He seems to regard a mystery problem as a personal challenge.

Try Startanator in Tiptree.. 01621 816699,

He charged me £40 to strip down, clean and change bearings etc on my anchor winch motor... Used to be an engineer at Marconi, now semi retired.
Also does Starters and Alternators..

Just thought I'd update everyone on what happened with the Starter Motor.

I went to Danbury auto electrics where they took a look at it and declared the thing proper knackered. Somehow it had rusted on the inside and much of it was in need of replacing.

They quoted 125quid for a total rebuild using Danish parts.

Having read some horror stories around cheap Chinese clone starters breaking up and wrecking engines. I went for the Danbury total rebuild.

Not tested it yet (will do next weekend I think) but they were very professional, clearly knew what they were talking about and I'm certain they'll have done a great job.

It still saved me money with the rebuild as a new starter from KeyParts was 180 quid and Volvo... well we all know Volvo pricing :)

Thanks for all the help.
