Starter motor help please

If you experience lack of power from the starter and big voltage drop even when battery is well charged, reason could be partially burnt winds. Tried that myself.
Emergency starting was possible for me by lifting decompression levers, spin the engine with the starter and then close the levers. Started my engine a couple of times.
This might make it possible for you to get your boat home before incurring extra marina charges.
 
When it came to replace the batteries, I thought the same ie one should be a cranking type. I did read somewhere however that 2 leisure batteries wiuld be better and seeing as the ones I took out were both leisure type I replace like for like as they did the job just fine. I've only got a little space and am restricted to 85ah because of this.
Regarding the original problem, it seems either the starter or solenoid has failed. I managed to remove one bolt but the other one wouldn't budge and being that the only reasonable access was via a hatch inside the cockpit locker, when the wind and rain started I decided it was lunchtime. I need to find a tommy bar or borrow a wrench for the 10mm Allen key. Hopefully I'll have it off tomorrow.

Yes, the starter battery should be a Cold Cranking Amps battery.

Some leisure batteries have a CCA rating quoted. Some do not.

I dont know if that means some are more suitable for starting than others but it would, I agree, make sense to buy ones with a CCA rating if they are to be used for starting.

I have a suspicion that the main difference between the two types in some cases may only be the label.
 
Last year I had similar problems. I worked on both batteries and starter motor. It was very difficult to get the motor out but I did it in the end. It was tested in Luton and took five minutes and there was nothing wrong with it. Have you checked your wiring especially buss bars etc. Even loose connections. Batteries must be fully charged of course. But try not to flatten batteries by leaving things on when you leave or in other ways. This is really bad news for batteries. How old are the batteries?
If you are in the water don't fill the engine with water, turn the sea cock off whilst cranking the engine and then on again as soon as it runs.

Surely its not enough having a CCA rating quoted, it needs to be high enough to spin over your donk!
To the op - it sounds like your motor needs rewinding.

Take it into a local automotive repair shop. They (starters) are built like brick shithouses
and are generally easy and cheap to repair. I had one which was "sluggish" - all sorts of opinions were given about batteries etc - turned out all it needed was a a good clean and couple of drops of oil on the shaft bushes.
 
My intention is to take into a repair shop tomorrow and see what they can do. Like you say Cliff, it may just need a bit of TLC.
Regarding my battery choice the vp2001 is a single cylinder of about 10hp, it is actually hand crankable but the design of the boat makes it impossible to do so but it does start easily on just one leisure battery even if that battery has been running the lights and radio for a few hours. My normal start up procedure however, would be to de-compress and turn it over a few times,on both batteries, and then start.

I suspect you mean AJW? I did an internet search for someone close to Ferndown where I'm working at the moment and being they were only 5 mins down the road and wre recomended by another, I took there on the Monday and it was ready for collection on the Wednesday

The starter was knackered so taken to the above for repair where they replaced the phos bronze bushes re-machined the shaft, new brushes, new solenoid and a lick of paint for the sum of £85.00. Fitted last Friday, engine started lovley and taken to her home berth.
