“Ulysse”’s OOW was not alert and took avoiding action far too late.
IF the AIS recreation is accurate.
It is also possible that there was no avoiding action, and what appears to be the start of an attempted turn to port never really happened. The delay in putting the engines to slow ahead is notable, but at least they were not put to full astern.
