Stantion Base sealant

Hi,

I am about to re-attach some stantion bases. Whats the procedure? Seal the base to the deck with Sikaflex, liberally fill the bolt holes then bolt it all up? Then spend 3 weeks scraping off the excess.............

Thanks for the tip about filling compasses by the way, cooling the liquid worked a treat. Looks brand new.

I read somewhere that to get good clean results is to lay masking take around the area (base of stantion), remove stantion apply sealant, bolt down, then you should be able to take up the masking tape with the excess, leaving a good clean area.

Can you not just wipe off the excess befor it cures?

Yes, but where do I actually put it? In the Base-Deck join and/or in the deck bolt hole and or on the bolt/nut? On the bolt thread makes sense, but it will never ever come off again. Do I just smother the whole lot then wipe of the excess and worry about it 20 years?

I masked the area around; sealant in hole, on bolt, on stanchion base; did up until sealant started to squeeze out; left to go off then finally tightened up; trimmed around base with a craft knife, then peeled off excess.

Perfect, I will try that. I just didnt want to have to come on here next week and ask a question about how to get week old Sikaflex out of a still leaking Stantion base join etc.

Now if I can just unstick my shoes from the deck I can carry them home with me......

Same here. We butter the stantion base with sikaflex and fit it to the deck doing the bolts up finger tight. Then come back the next day and tighten up all the bolts. If they are tightened up with fresh sikaflex, it just all squeezes out of the sides and probably leaves very little under the stantion base. We make sure there is some sikflex under the bolts so that they are sealed and water can't work its way down the threads. When we tighten the bolts the head is held with a screwdriver and the nuts are turned - reasoning that turning the bolt will break the sikaflex seal.

Make sure surface is clean with acetone. We mask with tape and then wipe off the excess soon after it has squeezed out the side. Any bits missed or any untidyness is trimmed with a craft knife the next day after the bolts are tightened, and the masking tape is then removed.

I confess the royal we does most of the work. I taught SWMBO to rebed the deck hardware and she happily goes round lifting and rebedding anything that gives as much as a hint of leaking.

Or just use rubber thin gasket material cut to shape. Then you can lift stanchion base any time without destroying the seal and having to redo. Sikaflex is a great product but HWMBO thinks it's used too often and brings in it's own problems.
