I am looking to replace my stays and shrouds, but am having trouble trying to locate someone who sells such things.

Does it need to be specific specifications (other than size) or can it just be ordinary wire rope, and what sort of place can I find reasonably priced stuff.

Its only for a small vivacity 20 so no need for any high performance or anything just enough to keep the mast upright.

thanks

Provided the existing rig is set up OK, take the existing stuff to a rigging shop and they will make up new to match in diameter, type and end fittings.

On the other hand if you have awfull lee helm, a pumping or capsized mast or sagging forestay, pay a bit more and get the rigger out to have a look first.

cambrian Marine in Cardiff do it ,phone number is 02920343459

They may tell you of a more local company if Cardiff is too far.

Presuming that it all fitted ok before,Best way is to take the old stays complete with the old rigging screws in so they can get the length exactly right.

Some firms advertise in PBO mail order rigging service.

Be wary that the price seems to vary greatly from firm to firm.

Echo recommendation for S3i - used them this winter for our 22 footer - 8 stays incl. bronze rigging screws, split backstay & some other stuff was -£350. If doing it yourself, and all is OK with your boat set-up now, tape or mark rigging screws while the rigging is tensioned so that you can set them back in the same place to measure the "working" length of the stay. This, together with wire diameter and terminations required should be sufficient to get the rigging made up.

S3i web-site will let you cost out the job yourself, if you want. As noted elsewhere, prices vary obscenely - 4mm wire anywhere between 50p and 2.00 per meter when I was looking.

Offered the work to the local "captive" rigger first, and was prepared to pay a bit more to keep a local business going, but he couldn't be bothered to quote. Quizzed me about where I eventually got it from when he was re-stepping the mast this year. When I told him, he muttered about "cheap foreign rubbish" and "soft metal". I note his comments, but have no reason to doubt the quality of what was supplied.

Incidentally, after launch, I found that a loose screw about half way up the forestay foil was preventing me hoisting the jib. Must have vibrated loose on the travel hoist, coz I checked them all before hand...

Beware.

It never ceases t oamaze me the frendlyness and proffesional advice I get from these forums. Once again thnks everybody, I am a simple newcommer to the boat ownership game, and very much value your comments.

Had the same response from various people but S3i were £300 cheaper than a firm in Plymouth!

S3i also do architectural work the Albert Hall among other edifices they have supplied with the necessary. The quality is without doubt.

I have also been very impressed with S3i.

I had ten pieces made up with a total length of over 100 metres of 8mm wire.

They went to a lot of trouble to supply the correct terminations to match my mast fittings and also supplied the plastic retaining clips.

The quality of workmanship is good and their price was much better than anyone else, In some cases less than half that of some of the other quotes.
