Hi Folks,

I am adjusting/ tuning our standing rigging and have no problem getting a vertical mast by adjusting the cap shrouds. I am finding it rather more difficult getting a straight mast when sighting up the luff groove, so wondered if there are any little tricks when making adjustments,. The rig is masthead ,deck stepped with one set of in-line spreaders, single aft lower shrouds and baby stay.

Many thanks

Rob

It is not clear if OP has trouble getting his mast straight by adjusting rigging or in sighting the mast to confirm it is straight.
Regarding second problem I have been known to use a 1 metre straight rule held up while I stand some distance away from the boat. Look from behind and from the sides. More difficult if it is on the water and swaying. Another trick is to tension the main halyard to the gooseneck. If it falls clear of the mast it should show bend.
Regarding actual adjustment I would suggest a fairly loose baby stay then adjust the inner aft stays to get the mast straight when viewed from behind or in front.
Then tighten up the baby stay unti you get a just perceptible bend middle forward. If baby stay seems too loose tighten both aft inner side stays the same amount like 2 turns on botle screw then tighten the baby stay some more. many boats have the baby stay adjustable pulling the middle forward in stronger winds to get some camber out of the main sail.
Though I don't think it does much usually. good luck olewill
