Standing rigging replacement

I stand corrected, I have just checked and both stalok, norseman, S3i and bluewave are all 316 stainless. I'm not sure where I read the bit about chrome plated brass someone defintiely makes them from chrome plated bronze, I have read it in the last few days but now can't remember where

Don't know if I'm reading the Suncor site wrong but their 'Quick attach' page looks like it only deals in life line applications, they don't show (produce?) all the normal end fittings associated with standing rigging. When you go to their other sections all the fittings are of the swaged type. Do they recommend the swageless fittings for rigging use? and have i just not woken up yet?

I have written to Suncor to ask them if these fittings are suitable for the standing rigging of cruising yachts, i.e. subject to cyclic loading and corrosive environment; and what sevice life they would expect. I have also asked them for fatique and corrosion test data.

I have not seen any Suncor recommendations for using these fitting in standing rigging, apart from making repairs. I suspect that they might not have much of a service life in the marine environment.

I will post here again when I get a reply from Suncor.

Thanks for all the replies, it will be interesting to see what Sunco say, however, over Christmas I put my money where my mouth is and bought a complete new set of rigging, wires, swageless terminals and bottlescrews from Securefix, so I hope they work!

I think you'll find that the chrome plated bronze was the turnbuckles. SS threads tend to gall under heavy loads, so they are not the preferred option. Reading so much marketing literature to select long-term equipment tends to lead to information overload!

Had new standing rigging supplied from a well known solent rigging shop and the 6mm "Sta-Lok" terminal suppplied loose for me to fit to one of my forestays was not marked as sta-lok and I suspect is a cheaper pattern fitting - a bit naughty by the riggers but I suspect if there had been any problems with these then it would not have been supplied - there are probably lots of these about in use without giving any problems.

I agree. As others have said anything with teeth is bad news.

Don't worry.Sta-Locs have no markings at all on them.I've seen Norseman copies but never Sta-locs.

I dont know either of the fittings you mention but I thought I would tell you about the place I use for my standing rigging. It is AP Lifting in the Midlands , I had 6mm ss wire with 1 thimble at each end (x6) and 6 rigging screws for just under £200 inc P&P. I hasten to add they arnt some cowboy outfit either they do stress testing and all sorts of certified work. Our club got some chain from them for our moorings and apparently they were the cheapest in the country. They are in the phone book and have a web site.
