Need to start a 'programme' of standing rigging replacement, first two of the shrouds on my Centaur. Never done this before can it be done in the water without taking mast down?
I'm in Conwy, anyone know of someone good and inexpensive to do the work?

Thanks

Yes you can do it in the water with mast up. But you have to be prepared to go up the mast amnay times. Start by removing one or both inner shrouds (sidestays). Take them to a supplier and get them to duplicate in new wire. (make a note if you would prefer any variation in length)
When you have refitted the inners then remove one at a time the cap shrouds using one or more halyards tensioned to the chain plate or toe rail to give the mast some support.
These are the most critical IMHO. You will probably want to do the forestay inner forestay and backstay in a similar manner. It just takes a lot of trips to the supplier. good luck and don't look down. olewill

Yes, it can be done.

I replaced my forestay last year with the mast up by using a masthead halyard connected to the stemhead fitting and then tensioned to act as a temporary forestay. Just adapt this by using a halyard attached to a shroud chainplate.

Ask locally for best supplier/prices for new standing rigging as ideally you need to provide the rigger with the shroud you want replacing to ensure you get a replacement of the correct length.

As it was the first time I'd attempted this job i asked around in my sailing club for advice/experience and then conscripted some helpers to assist /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Bu$$er, must type faster!

There's a rigger at conwy marina though I think he may be a bit pricey (or he didn't want the job!). I got mine supplied by Bollin Rigging (over in Cheshire) who was equal cheapest out of about 5 quotes nationwide. Good quality fittings and very helpful (I don't have his number to hand but he advertised in PBO, PM me if you can't find it and I can look it up). Also PD Riggers at Port Dinorwic marina are very helpful though I didn't know about them when I ordered my rigging so they didn't quote for me. I used them to step my mast last summer and they also refitted my furling gear for quite a reasonable price. They are a bit closer to Conwy so well worth a chatAgain I can probably dig out contact details if you need them.

I had all my rigging built by Partingtons in Pwllheli, really happy with the price and Will is a really nice bloke to deal with.

I had my mast stepped but I know a few who have replaced with the mast up, personally I would not bother as I see it as a good chance to check everything and carry out any other maintenance.

I would agree that the Partingtons' are good people to deal with. When we bought our boat through them, we got them to quote for replacing our standing rigging, and they came back with a fair price, but we elected to leave it for a year. Partington's aren't exactly handy for Conwy, though /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif.

I asked Tony(?), the rigger who works from the marina, for a quote for the complete job, but he would only give an estimate, and didn't seem interested. I ended up doing it myself with bits ordered from S3i who were very good.

I would compare Tony's price for supplying the bits & doing the swages with some of the other places mentioned above. The convenience must be worth something, even if he was bit dearer (he has to pay Quay Marinas their pound of flesh).

I suppose there's always Harrods in Bangor (Dickies).
