I have recently purchased a standard Horizon CP 300i The unit powers up and seem to be ok acquiring satellites and a fix quite quickly. However when I introduce a see C Map cartridge by following the instructions in the book (insert cartridge switch on) the system says it's starting up and beeps occasionally but has now been stuck like this for 20 minutes any suggestion?

It may be a faulty cartridge. I had this earlier this year with the CP180. It was a new cartridge bought at the same time as the plotter. After discussions with SH I had the card exchanged and now all works OK.

That does not sound right.

I take the cartridge out regularly from my CP180 as it is mounted in the cockpit and also swap it with a memory cart to download tracks. It seems happy whether or not it has been powered down. However there are warning messages and a nag screen to accept (clr button) as it reads the new cart.

Are you using the correct sort of cartridge. Probably best to check the cartridge first, try in another unit -perhaps at a chandlers.

If new and bought as a bundle (CP & Chart), I'd take the problem to the vendor, but if bought separately, check first that you have the correct type of C-Map card.
From my manual:-
"The GPS Chart Plotter contains a Worldwide background that allows you to zoom into 2NM. For more detail, a C-MAP BY JEPPESEN NT+/MAX C-CARD must be purchased and installed."
However, I think my chart card this year is know as "Extra Wide".

I've had my CP300i/C-Map for about seven years and it has performed really well, but the C-Map codification of their products still baffles me. (Why do companies think we are so interested in them that we will spend time keeping up with their branding?)

Good luck
Bob

It's not a new cartridge and it works fine for my old Northstar 550 Plotter strangely not long after I posted my original message the unit powers up
and the charts with there however on powering down the unit and switching back on its now gone into starting up system beeping and has been stuck for over 20 minutes again I just don't understand !

Just following my "Is it a valid card?" line (apologies in advance if it is not appropriate for your issue),

You don't mention the exact type of chart card you are using - The Northstar 550 could use NT-MAX, NT+ or NT chart cards. The SH was specced to use NT+/MAX ( I may be wrong but I take that to mean NT+ or MAX).

FYI, here are the 'old' types of card that can be upgraded, followed by the new (2014) types:-

Hi it's a C map NT+ what I don't understand is it found it once but now can't seem to ?

Thanks for the clarification - that knocks my possibility into touch! [If at the end of this, you decide to upgrade it is a bit cheaper to do if you join Club Jeppesen £8 + VAT.]

It will be interesting to hear how things turn out

Good Luck
Bob

Thanks must say I'm confused it's now beeping away ever 20 seconds saying "starting up system" but if I remove the card it fires up almost instantly

Just a thought
Have you tried the System Test and/or the RAM reset (Chapter 18 of my manual). It is supposed to test the RAM and the C-Card.

The Northstar plotter was a development from the Navman 5500 series plotters. I had a Navman plotter with the a Cmap chart chip and when I bought my SH 300i I was informed that the chip from the Navman would not work in the SH plotter. In the end I sold the Navman with its chart chip and bought the correct cmap chip for the SH. No problems.

If you look on the Cmap website, there is a list of which chips work in which plotters. Whilst both Cmap, the Navman/Northstar uses a different chip format from the SH models

if a co ordinate is shown as 51'45'63 is that DD.dddd. DD. MM.SS or. DD.MM.mmmm

Sorry, I can't tell from the info you have given. If you had typed 51º 24′ 30", it would be DD.MM.SS
If you had typed 51º 24′.500 or 51º 24.500 it would be DD.MM.mmm

The options on my system are
· DDD MM SS
Degrees, Minutes, Seconds
· DDD MM.MM
Degrees, Decimal Minutes to 2 decimal places
· DDD MM.MMM
Degrees, Decimal Minutes to 3 decimal places

Hope that helps
Bob
