Am looking at the CP180i and VHF GX1500E DSC VHF - total for the 2 is £391.80 inc VAT.

This looks to be an awful lot of kit for the money - I remember when A DSC would have been this much on it's own!

So - question is - I realise this stuff isn't absolute top drawer stuff, but given we rarely go much further than round the odd headland - I get the feeling it will do far more than we ever need it to. I've only ever had a little hand-held GPS before so a proper plotter will be a delight.

Thanks and all opinions welcome - good and bad

I had a SH chartplotter on my last boat. It was an excellent bit of kit and would happily have one again. You can't go wrong for that money.

Re: Standard Horizon Plotter & VHF

Only hd experience of their HH VHFs which I sell excellent value and reliable.

I like the look of their plotters too. Is the price you have been quoted for both a new price? and how big is the screen on the plotter?

Re: Standard Horizon Plotter & VHF

Yup - Brand new for both from a UK dealer (found it on the web doing a search for the CP180i) - it's cheaper than one on eBay!

5" screen - they do a 7" widescreen too, the CP300 - but I can't justify the extra cost to be honest.

SH have good after sales service. I had a CP1000 (10") after a season it had some damp inside. As it has a 3 year warranty they took it back updated the software and resealed it. However it got damp again. So they said “we are not having that, will your helm fit a CP500? (12") They sent me a brand new (just on the market) CP 500.

I liked the fact I got straight through to a real person who was genuinely concerned about my problem.

As for the plotter features its great. Would definitely consider other SH kit.

Another vote for the cp180i (no experience with the gx1500 vhf).

The handheld vhf is great though

I went for Standard Horizon too as it's the marine division of Yaesu which is highly regarded by radio hams.

'Jon Brooks' is the guy to talk to on the forum as a boater and dealer sales manager for Yaesu. He advised me a on SH equipment and I must say I have been very pleased with since I installed it on Houston last spring, works well and no problems to date.

Nice to hear the level of back-up 'Frontier' experienced too. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Must be me then got though 3 plotters 2 ariels and fist mike for the radio in one year of purchase. latest plotter is taped up with gaffier tape and id now water proof . Jon Brooks no longer works at SH.
On the plus side its ok , not the best but does what is required for depth you need the black box pricey, after sales is very good guess i was unlucky.

just changing one of our plotters to garmin 555s .

Another vote for the CP300 - pay the extra money, you'll be well pleased with the screen size and the resolution is brilliant. I'm sure the 180 is based on the same electronics so I reckon you've already concluded you'll not be disappointed.

Re: Standard Horizon Plotter & VHF

Ok so on it's own the CP180i is £283.88
The CP300 is £489 !!!!

I really don't see how it can be worth double, for the limited navigation I will be doing, unless someone can persuade me otherwise?? Bearing in mind money is very tight, and I could put that £200 to other jobs.

What extra features does the 300 give me (from the manual I don't see many other than the soft keys at the bottom) - Whilst this might make a process easier, all the processes seem available on the 180i just with a couple more keystrokes.

Re: Standard Horizon Plotter & VHF

Agreed - if it's only for coastal boating then go for the 180. The only difference I think is the size of the screen. You know us boys - size is everything !! ;-)

I got mine from the States (before Mr Brown did his best to cr4p on our pound) and saved a good amount. Might be worth a look but I expect the exchange rate will make it not worth while - PM me if you want the guy's e mail anyway.

I have a Standar Horizon CP1000 chart plotter and the GX1500E, can recommend both. Had a Simrad radio up until recently and the Standard Horizon seems far superior even though it's one of their cheaper VHF's

I had the proceeding model VHF on my last boat for 2 years without a problem.

I fitted another Horizon DSC fixed set to my current Flybridge almost 4 years ago, it has been in the wet and damp only protected by canvas cover while not in use.

It has been 100% reliable (touch wood).

I did not get on so well with the more expensive Icom.

No complaints with my SH Plotter, had 2 both the CP155 I think, a few years ago on my old boat I had a problem with a damaged mounting for it, this was replaced (i think) FOC, or if not free then for very little cash! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The mounting bracket, that was the only poorly designed thing about it. Not the standard screw type fixings at either side but something near the middle which means when you try to push a button the whole unit moves!

I've got a CP155 linked to a 1500 VHF plus a remote mic - excellent bits of kit.

But don't forget you will also need a chart cartridge which could add another, I'm guessing since I've not bought one for ages, £100 or so depending on it's size.
