Old VHF was working fine but had a weird fault when it would randomly switch channels mid passage. New radio goes in, testing it with Coastgaurd, nothing. Get out hadheld and the only channel I can get the two to communicate using is M1. Unplugged antennae and still can communicate over M1 (but no other channels) tried 66, 80 and M1.

If M1 works without extrernal antennae plugged in, shouldn't the others? Or should it and the fault it somewhere in the antennae?

Thanks

Try a Couple of channels below 20.

You said you tried 66, 80 and M1 and only M1 worked. That is correct, 66 and 80 are duplex channels and not ship to ship.. A transmitting vhf without an aerial a few metres from a receiver may still work. Anyway, if the new radio is not working you need to plug in an aerial known to work and if no joy, take the radio back to the shop for a refund or replacement.
