Standard Horizon Firmware Update

I have just downloaded the form - It looks like they send you a card with the updated on which you then have to return within 30 days or get charged £75.

There appears to be a new user manual as well but it's not easy to see what they've changed or fixed in this new version. Did you manage to find a list of what is new or fixed in this version?

I updated my CP180 early last year, when I fitted an ANT200 AIS - SH were prompt and didn't charge as I returned the upgrade card in time.

This time, I'll see if I can find the changelog before updating - note that all user data (waypoints, etc) are lost *unless* you copy it from plotter onto a (user) data card beforehand.

(Top-tip - take a picture with your phone of the info screen of your plotter 'cos there are a *lot* of version numbers shown.

I'd guess this update is optional for most users unless they're added extra kit - I'm still swithering over whether Chi entrance re-bouyage is a good enough reason to update my local Solent C-MAP - that's probably higher priority than plotter f/w.

I added some user defined marks to show the new location of West Pole etc. They don't have the sexy data and photos but it was simpler and cheaper than updating the chip.

I read somewhere (probably here) that the upgrade gives you a split screen/scale. It stuck in my mind because I thought this made it worth going for.
Must admit that I really have no evidence for this!

I upgraded mine last year.

In fact the upgrade card would not work on my machine and after trying several different cards the plotter had to sent to SH for the firmware update.

SH were first class throughout all the faffing.

The main noticeable change as far as I can remember was to enable split screen viewing, ie chart plotter plus something else.

On the 300 size screen just maybe, but I would have though totally impractical for the 180 size

I haven't checked the version I have - plotter is on the boat - but the update to enable the split screen was introduced last year.

I am assuming this is another firmware update, or has someone come late to the party?

The version number is the same as I loaded last year,............ so yes someone has come late to the party.

Hmmm... I purchased mine in June of last year, so I need to go check the actual version number to see if the update is needed. Of course, the unit may have been sitting in a warehouse for a year or more, so being recently purchased doesn't ensure it's up to date.

Must I do it?

I have a CP180. I have no need or desire for a split screen. Do I have to do this firmware thing? The machine is well out of warranty now...

Thank you
Graham

I have just received the card to update the firmware the version on my plotter which was new in december is 16.20, the firmware update version is 16.22 not sure what changes it will make as SH have not supplied that information however the plotter will be updated over the weekend so I will advise what the changes are if noticable.

Thanks. I look forward to your report.

Emulator

If you happen to live near enough to SH in Winchester (near M3) you can take the plotter in and the very helpful receptionist will update it for you there and then - no messing with cards. As stated above if you have a user card you should save all your data first.

I think the update is very good, the split screen is useful even on a 180.

You can try out the changes first by downloading and running the PC emulator program on your PC. The emulator is on the US site. Go to http://www.standardhorizon.com
then click "Products" - "GPS Chart Plotters" - <your plotter>.

You will see the PC emulator link near top of page. Also a PDF user guide is on the "Files" tab.

The US site gives a manual at version V16.20, the V16.01 Owners Manual is on the UK site at a similar location (www.standardhorizon.co.uk), but here the tab is labelled "Downloads". Note: for 180i you need to select 180 for some reason.

-- Just noticed the post above about the firmware being 16.22, so the US manual is probably most up to date! --
