Standard Horizon CP300 Chartplotter or Navionics Android Tablet

Hello pannel,

I have come across a good price Standard Horizon CP-300 with the mega wide UK maps for under £600. The CP alone I can get for £400 new.

Is it worth having one. I am unsure if it is worth the investment, I know the unit is now getting on a bit in terms of when it was first released.

I have already Navionics on my Android tablet which seems to work well.

I do like the idea of being able to connect an AIS feed to the plotter though.

Basically is it worth forking out for the dedicated plotter, or just stick to my tablet?

Personally I wouldn't touch Navionics with a barge pole, and a long one at that.

I can only say that I never regretted purchasing my 500 series SH plotter over 5 years ago now. It is reliable, easy to use, runs C-map which I prefer, and unlike Raymarine they will provide any software updates free of charge to update your unit to todays spec. If you are in a warm dry atmosphere an android tablet will work but will it like being showered in salt water periodically ? Don't worry about the CP-300 "getting on a bit" there is an old adage about if it aint broke dont mend it. Other manufacturers seem to delight in bringing out new models just to obsolete the old ones and then not supporting them any more. To my knowledge SH support all of the kit they have ever released to the UK market still.

I have a SH CP180 and can view it in sunlight, it is reasonably waterproof so I don't have to hide it away if its raining.

I have an android tablet which has the same chart.

Which one do I rely on?

CP180 every time!

I updated the firmware on my SH CP180 the other week.
When I was on the phone I suggested that this would probably be the last update.
Kelly replied no, as they were still making and marketing them.

SH CP180 is the way to go.
