I've just ordered the GX-1500E with optional RAM mic. I want to wire it all in next week when I get home. And I would like to order the wire for the RAM mic before I get home, but cannot find the wiring instructions on-line.

Can anyone tell me what wire is required for this?

Many thanks

The mic comes with quite a lot of wire already. I ordered one recently and I reckon there was 10m of wire... Do you need more?

I'll be mounting the radio at the chart table with RAM in the cockpit, had estimated a 6m run, so 10m of cable sounds great.

Thanks Dick

Just fitted one - cable is actually about 7m so you should be OK. extra 7M lengths available worst case

Hardest bit was working out where to put the mic!

Supplied cable is great with fittings on either end... only down side is having to drill the oversized holes to take the fitting. But works great and makes life alot easier (bet the handheld becomes redundant) my only problem is whn i mounted the mic on the cockpit bulkhead i assumed there would be sufficient coiled lead to reach the aft of the cockpit ... there is not ... i can just reach the mic and still hold the helm just... having said that too much lead will only produce clutter!

I think the cable supplied with mine was 7m, but that proved long enough from nav station to cockpit on a 45 foot boat, once I had discovered the correct cable route. The most useful (indeed vital) tool for the job was a borrowed cable routing tool consisting of a coiled length of spring steel.

The plug on the end that fits the radio is the smaller one, so it is best to start from the cockpit and feed the cable towards the fixed set.

P.S. Excellent piece of kit once installed.

Hi,
Anyone know what the type of plug is on the end of the extension lead?? Item that mounts onto your console that you then plug the mic into... The pins have corroded and I want to replace the socket not the whole lead!!

For what its worth I had to cut my cable due to space constraints fitting it through stanchions with the pug on it. No big deal to rejoin it (or extend it) so long as you use coaxial for the microphone core (which is red and screened). A bit fiddly but quite do-able.

On the subject of RAM microphones and Standard Horizon sets.

Does your RAM microphone reset its Squelch level everytime it is powered on (from the main radio). Mine powers on with the squelch fully open which is annoying. Standard Horizon support have not provided a conclusive answer.

No, everything is as I had it set on previous power down.

Just a thought... Which fixed VHF do you have and which RAM? The newer CMP30 works with the older and newer generation of Fixed sets, but to attach to an older one (like my GX1500) needs to be "programmed" as such, other wise you get some odd behaviours. It's all in the manual

Hi,
So I managed to find out that the plugs are Anthenol, however they have stopped production on the screw fit type, so after a bit of email tennis with Anthenol, I decided to bite the bullet and just buy a new CT-100 cable.

I was planning to run the whole thing but getting either plug through the binnacle isnt happening so bit the bullet and cut the cable....

Only problem is that on soldering all the wires together, including the mic core (spliced together, not plugged), I dont get full usability. Actually the only things that happen are I am able to turn the set on and off, and also the push to talk button seems to switch the set to Tx, but I havent tested to see if there is audio. There is no display, and none of the other buttons seem to work...

Are there any pointers to where to look next? I am sure the soldered joints are good and each is heat shrinked.

How did you manage to cut and re-join the cable?

Jason

Hi. No magic trick just made sure I had my colour coding correct. The extension cabling I used had different coloured cores to the proprietary cables so I made a list along the lines of 'Red to Orange, Green to Blue etc' and reversed it at the other end. All worked fine.
