Stanchion repair

One of my stanchions has gone loose at the base is you can move the top around more than would be expected. I have removed the stanchion from its base but unsure how to proceed further. Any suggestions as to how to get the next bit off without damaging it?

Is the stanchion loose on the base or is it the base itself which is loose?

The base itself is loose.

It fixes with a hefty nut underneath.

Thanks for that I found the site but this suggests it is bolted through the deck from below. Is that right?

As for pasting URLs on iPad I think you hold on the URL until you are offered the copy option, select it then go to where you want it and hold to paste.

That's what it looks like. A 16mm thread so it's pretty sturdy; far better than many bases which are fitted with relatively small screws. But you'll need to get at it from down below. It may be buried in GRP if you are unlucky.:disgust:, but it will be there somewhere. Be prepared to buy a spanner that will get at an awkward place, at an awkward angle, with little room.

Once the base starts moving it's worth sorting sooner rather than later due to water leaks.

Thanks, I have found the access point and tomorrow will see if I can tighten it. I am hoping that is all that is needed.

I hate to say it but, at the very least it would be an idea to put new sealant under the base....for the reason Talulah gives above. If it is moving the existing seal will almost certainly have been broken.
Personally, I would grit my teeth, take the thing off and try to see why it has loosened. It's unlikely that the nut has simply come undone.

I asked a similar question myself a few weeks ago, this is what my stanchions look like in situ, I suspect the ones above are similar.

I've raked out all the sealant, this will probably be what is holding down the cap on Bob's boat, so perhaps a filling knife will cut it out. Underneath there are big washers, and a pair of nuts.
