stanchion base grub screw size?

Does anyone know the diameter of the grub screw which locks a Stanchion into the base.
I think its M6 by around 6mm long. I helping a friend fix a BENETEAU, so we can go racing on Friday, and a stanchion is loose.
 
Try any M6 bolt in the thread to confirm. If it's not M6, try other bolts in it until you get the answer, then purchase the correct grubscrew.
As a short-term solution you could shorten a suitable bolt and use it to secure the stanchion until the genuine article is acquired.
 
If it is a grub screw you will undo it either with a screwdriver (some old grub screws had a screwdriver slot) or more likely a hex allen key.

I would get a selection of allen keys and try then in the grub screw until it fits snugly then try to tighten it.

If that fails try applying some heat, with a heat gun. If you find that you have reamed out the screwdriver slot or the Allen key hole, the time has come to drill it out , using a drill bit of slightly smaller diameter than the screw hole. Then clean out the remaining material and discover what type and size of grubscrew is required, as I have described in #4. (This advice on removing the existing grubscrew presupposes that it has not already been removed).

I may be missing something somewhere ..... but I'm not sure how that relates to the OP's question? :unsure:

The OP stated " a stanchion is loose." and he wants to go sailing on Friday.

The OP asked about a grub screw so 2 + 2 tells me he has a loose grub screw in the stansion base , so the quickest way would be to tighten it up.

If he cannot then he goes to plan be which is to drill it out as Spirit (of Glenans) posted.

I know some think I have a screw loose but that's another story
 
Sorry for any confusion or lack of clarity in the initial post. The grub screw is missing, lost. It's a Benetaue, so it's most likely metric, I don't think it's as small as M4, it could be M5 or M6. I'll go to Bunnings today and buy a selection of metric 316 hex head bolts of around the right size, one is sure to fit, and take it from there. At least I'll be able to make the stanchion secure so we can go sailing.
I'd assumed that the grub screws would be more or less standard for a stanchion base on a Benetaue, and that someone on the forum would know the size, which would save a lot of messing about with bolts.

Ah, OK I understand now. I had assumed that the grub screw was missing or stripped but I can see now that it wasn't that clear at that time.
