I've just brought some Stalok supajust turnbuckles and they seem to have changed the design. They use to have a tapered nut to lock the fitting but they have redesigned it and it now has a plain hex nut. (but their website still brags about "special taper locking nuts")
I'm being told that this offers superior performance over the old tapered nut, I'm not an engineer but I really can't see how this can be anything other that cost cutting, or am I just making a fuss about nothing.
Pics attached showing old and new (they are two different sizes but hopefully you can see what I'm getting at.

Simply looking at your pics, I would prefer the plain nut. It looks as if in at least one pic the tapered part of the nut has bottomed onto the turnbuckle body, rather than screwing up tight. If perfectly engineered, I can see that it would be neater, but I think I would prefer simplicity. Maybe also a corrosion issue if sealant is not used?

That's a good point, water would pool in the nut and corrode the stud pretty quick. Remind me if these screws have bronze inserts as galling might be an issue.

Stalok.... a manufacturer that cares

I emailed Stalok telling them I wasn't happy and got this reply from their sales director

We are sorry to have caused you this problem. The “special taper locking nuts “are very expensive to manufacture and it was not possible to pass on this cost to our customers, this being the case we decided to drop them and sell the open body style version of the Supajust range for Yachting and Hex: nuts on the closed body version for industrial usage. The hex nut does not distract from the overall performance of the Turnbuckle. However we have failed to change our www fast enough to prevent the problem you have, although all our distributors were informed at the time. Our new website is now almost completely rebuilt and will be launched in just a few weeks time where the problem will not reoccur. Would it help you if we supply you with the special taper locking nuts now? If so we will manufacture them and get them to you at our cost, please let me have the size and quantity you need. Again please accept our apology for this and be assured your goodwill as a customer is important to us. Please ring me if you are not completely happy with our proposal and apology.
