Stainless swan neck cable gland

I've seen one on another forumites boat and it seems pretty neat. Anyone else got one and have any pro's/con's?

I have one. Excellent, simple way of getting cables and plugs through. You should fit it in such a way that jib sheets can't catch on the swan neck. I have a piece of sponge rubber stuck in the bottom of mine to keep out draughts and spiders.
 
We have one fitted on our boat, does the job fine hasn't passed any significant wetness down below even when bashing upwind with greenies over the deck from time to time.

One huge downside though, if it's fitted forward of the mast it can be a real problem if the genoa lazy sheet gets caught underneath. I usually discover this when short tacking and leaving it until the depth in the channel gives about 3 secs to touch down! :eek:

I keep meaning to come up with some way of deflecting a slack lazy sheet over the top of it but haven't done so yet. Other than that does exactly what it says on the tin.

Thanks, so just aft and to one side of the mast facing backwards?. Cant place it too close to the mast as I don't want to compromise the deck near the mast foot.
 
I have one the same as that mounted on a stainless box with all the connections in the sealed box above deck

Not all deck plugs leak. Have a look at the Index Marine fittings available from most chandlers. Easy to fit, low profile so no snagging and no need to break cables. Much cheaper too! No connection (!!) just happy user

You're not sailing fast enough! we used to get water into my shirt locker on the occasional close fetch, but bunging sponge up has cured that.

I have one, fitted aft of the mast but facing forward. Need to consider the path the cables will run from the mast. Also consider if the cables are going to have plugs fitted on them for connection below the deck. The plugs have to easily fit up and round the swan neck.
