While moored at the weekend my pulpit rail took a hammering from another boat. It didn't knock it out of shape but it has gouged a few feet of the stainless steel rail so it feels very rough to the touch.

Does anyone know if it is possible to smooth it down? Any ideas what, if anything, I should use on it?

Sand down using progresively finer paper and finish off with fine wet and dry as per paintwork. Then polish with a mop in the drill preferably using hard polish for stainless steel often available from proper tool shops. Should come up good as new!

I use 240 grit then 320 grit flap wheels in a drill or low speed die grinder to get the initial polish then the polishing mop Vic indicated to get to final high polish.
