Stainless steel 4mm staples and stapler for headlinings - where from?

Why not glue it then? My motorsailer has many large plywood panels with glued fabric without foam backing. About an inch of wrap, glued with Timebond, seems to be perfect.

As you are probably aware, the Bostik product data sheet for Timebond (e.g. at http://www.farnell.com/datasheets/1504114.pdf) says "Do not use Evo-Stik Timebond with vinyl or plasticised PVC as it will soften in time."

I had read an earlier post of yours about using Timebond successfully, but in the light of Bostik's statement and discussions about adhesives softening vinyl I finally decided not to risk it and used a waterproof wood glue. I think the the stapling helps with a non-contact adhesive, as well as providing extra security, and the additional time for stapling was relatively small in relation to the whole job - which I did not intend to do again!

Maybe depends on exactly which vinyl. We have used it many times, on boats and vans, with total success.

Just helped a mate with his head linings and found that the thicker duty 6mm didn't penetrate through the ply, probably because when bent the thicker gauge steel wire means it is slightly less than 6mm deep.
We soon ran out of those staples and instead we stuck foil backed bubble wrap insulation to the back of the boards. Very cheap, helps waterproof, insulate, and adds enough thickness to stop the staple poking through.

In one or two places we've used the bubble wrap to provide a smooth surface to stick the vinyl on to, for example rough grip inner hull.

Yes, perhaps so. I certainly didn't doubt your successes - and indeed I myself tested out a few other contact adhesives (not Timebond) which are specifically not recommended for vinyl, without apparent ill effect (at least in the short term). Just a question of a risk I finally decided not to take.
