As a foreigner who first heard of the town via Ali G, I still cannot help but cringe when I hear it. Completely unfair I know. Kingston-upon-Thames does sound more grand and gentrified.

Ah, yes, but that's because there are two syllables in 'Kingston' - same with Henley and Richmond and Walton and Goring to name a few.
Somehow just one syllable eg Staines - just doesn't sound right![]()

Staines is nowhere near as bad as it used to be, I have even had a drink in a Weatherspoons......

There used to be a department store called Johnstone & Clark (could well be still I guess), which used to be opposite another one called Kennards (now Debenhams). I had my first "Saturday" job in J & C, working behind the Ironmongery counter, and used to go down the road to a pub called the Garibaldi for a pint and a ploughmans for lunch......
