Stable Boats When Aground

Better than that would be a long stick to prod about with, it would be as well to do this in grid formation, a bit like mine sweeping. Deca navigation was invented in 1945 for the dday landings, the mine sweepers were kept exactly on course by the deca and they traveled a path a bit like a ploughed field across the english channel, proding away for mines on there way. Course in this event it would only be nesesary to prod around the harbour or where ever the grounding was to take place. Core samples could be taken and analised for load bearing qualities. Course this all would all depend on length of stick, water available and computation times for analisis of data recorded. All of course which must be calculated before the tide recedes. There for an exit plan must be developed inorder to escape over any bar or shallows, before one is inextraudenarily trapped. Where upon grounding will take place where ever!

If the keel settles on a rock then the boat could be tilted forwards -probably not too serious but would make the adjustment of the leg length rather interesting. If the keel misses the rock, or one of the legs sits on the top of it then either your nice hull or props get damaged or "whoops a daisy" the boat could tilt at a very interesting angle, putting a huge strain on the leg that is taking most of the weight.
I don't know if this would happen, but I can't see how it is worth risking with something like your new ship. Oh me of little faith.

But I made no sarcastic comment, only looking at things as I find them. Mucky Farter is not groundable, there for I choose a cruising area where this is not an eventuality. However my last two boats were beachable and I did this with the last boat in Ireland. Which is well recorded here. Whilst it did lay at a crazy angle and sleeping was only permitted on the wall. It did save it from sinking and righted it'self on the incoming tide! However it did have a flattish bottom.

Re: Gludy\'s not gonna like this

I'd also avoid legs, and go for the following arrangement whenever possible.
As the picture shows, the boat weight as such is no big deal.
It's how the grounding is handled that makes a difference (see also the flat and solid bottom).
Interestingly, the only boat of the lot with stabilizers has hard bilge keels to protect them.
Knowing what I spent just for some routine maintenance of my Naiad stabs, I'm not going to ground them for sure!

Re: Gludy\'s not gonna like this

Hmmm.... I see it directly into my post, don't understand why apparently you can't.
Let's try with the link...

Re: Gludy\'s not gonna like this

There seems yo be a bug in the forum as sometimes I can see the photo and sometimes it just has the image missing icon.
I actually think that this forum saoftware is a major step backwards over what we had before.

Re: Gludy\'s not gonna like this

I doubt thats a bug in the forum, it puts out the same HTML each time. I imagine its some issue at the site hosting the photograph, or your connectivity to it.

Re: Gludy\'s not gonna like this

The forum software does not send emails anymore.... its a real step backwards.
It was not operator error - it may have been that the site the photo was on was not functioning.
In the last 20 minutes the whole forum was down and up again - a common occurance.

Tee hee.

There you go again with personal attacks, Brendan! There was no call to laugh at Rick, just because he looks like Captain Birdseye.

I personally love the way the forum software gets blamed for operator error

[/ QUOTE ]
No one claimed that it was operator error. Rick merely pointed out that it may be a connectivity error. This was turning into a useful debate about internet connectivity, but you seem determined to hijack this thread and turn it into a personal vendetta against SD boat owners.

Re: Gludy\'s not gonna like this

? I've been on here for over 20 minutes reading posts, and no down time at all So must be at your end, not ybw's
This is getting silly

Brendon
I am on the backbone of the internet - I am part of it and have developed many multi-million pound web sites including dozens of very famous ones,I do know what I am talking about.

The connectivity can be down for a few seconds when Ichoose to browse - so you cannot claim to know if you were connecting at that second.

As regards the photo, I have checked and it points to an error this forum software the link works perfectly on its own.

Now can we please get back to the subject of the thread.

Re: Gludy\'s not gonna like this

Considering the number of 'views' and messages this forum gets, I'm staggered it runs as well as it seems to. Admittedly, the 'e-mail a followup message' no longer works, but that probably goes some way to stemming the back-n-forth on contentious threads.

Hard to see how you could do better, Gludy?

Rick
