Sta Lok connector cones Question?

I am going to replace my guard rails this winter and have now ordered some replacement wires ( with swaged fork ends instead of Talurit splices, as price was much the same). The other ends of the wires have Sta Lok connectors on them, the question is can you re-use the connector cones inside the barrels or do I need to replace the cones to re-make the joints again?

Best replace them to be safe for a few pence. Im sure staylock would send you some

I have re-used mine several times after being forced to change stanchions. They do tend to become a little corroded over time but for guard wires remain perfectly adequate.

No problem reusing them but I have on occasion had trouble pushing back the outer fitting to reveal the wire and cone. In these instances I've had to use a new cone and outer piece. Hence if you don't want to be stuck half way through the job it may be worth having a spare or two.

I have never re-used the cones for two reasons.

!. The instructions say "always use a new cone" and I tend to follow instructions. Most of the time.

2. When I have tried to dismantle Stayloks, I found that the ring bit was firmly fixed on the wire and the only way of recovering it was to cut the wire close to where it comes out of the ring and then to use a drift to drive wire and cone through the ring. The cone is in the middle of this lump of stuff and I never fancied my chances of getting it out undamaged.

I've reused the cones on 7mm 1by19 terminals.When some time later I disassembled them the cones were cracked.They are cheap enough not to take the risk of that happening.

The terminal wouldn't come apart even if the cone was cracked but best to replace, obviously.

Thanks for all the info received and everybody’s input, maybe I will buy a couple of spares and see how I get on when stripping the first side down.

Sta-Lok doesn't tell you to use new cones just to make money. They deform when used and can break if used a second time. If the money is a problem I am afraid you should pick a cheaper sport

“ If the money is a problem I am afraid you should pick a cheaper sport “ --- My boat is not run on a shoe string, but I don’t throw money away unnecessarily either, and having spent over 10K on the boat since purchase 2009 I take that remark as a bit of a snide remark !
