My ST60 wind instrument display shows windspeed but the direction arrow rotates at about 10rpm, sometimes clockwise sometimes anticlockwise. I have replaced the masthead unit and tested to in mast cable which is ok. Any advice appreciated.

Electrical Check. Is this what you've done?
Red to shield should read 8 volts DC steady.
This is the masthead power supply, coming
from the ST50/ST60 display head. If the
head is damaged, you may need to provide
this power from another source to test the
masthead.
Blue to Shield should read anywhere
between 2 and 6 volts DC. This is the port
side directional element. The voltage
changes as the vane turns.
Green to Shield should read anywhere
between 2 and 6 volts DC. This is the
starboard side directional element.
Yellow to shield should read between 0 and
5 volts DC. This is the wind speed circuit.
The faster the wind is blowing, the higher
the voltage will read.
If any of these readings are out of spec, you
should assume the masthead is damaged, and it should be repaired or replaced.
Raymarine has a repair shop you can ship these transducers to for repair. I believe it is about $145.00 to
rebuild the unit. Go to their web site for more info. If you have an authorized dealer nearby, you can
take it to him.

If you have replaced the masthead transducer and the cable is ok then it can only be the instrument head itself. It's actually cheaper to buy a new system, say i60 wind system, than buy the separate bits. I have recently done this.
Incidentally the masthead transducer is easily repaired. The circuit board is available for £65 here should you ever need one.

Very easy to take the transducer apart and replace the board.

ST 60 Wind - again

Hi There,

You say in your message that you installed a new masthead unit and tested it to the in mast cable. You do not say if you tested to the instrument head.

Note: if the voltage tests at the instrument head are not ok, test at the junction box (if you have one) above the deckhead lining near the deck gland?, to prove the cable from the junction box to instrument head. If there is a fault in the mast cable, then you will need to replace the masthead mounting block and cable. I had to do this and I used the old cable as a mouse. However, the mast was down at the time and had a couple of ‘mice’ already run.

Your symptoms appear to me to be lack of linearization

If you have fitted a new model masthead transducer (it is a different shape to the original ST60/ST60+ type, but a replacement model and compatible) then you must linearize it before aligning the pointer to the masthead vane direction. Also, you need to enter a new calibration factor into the instrument head in order for the instrument to display the correct wind speed.

Try the linearization and if successful, the pointer will stop rotating. You can then carry out the calibration input factor for wind speed and then align the pointer. All explained in the handbook which should be read in conjunction with the additional instructions (see below) supplied with the new masthead unit.

Good luck,

Thanks very much for informative replies. The boat is indoors at the moment with mast out. The rotating readout was there before I replaced the masthead unit so replacing this masthead unit didn't make any difference. I'll check voltages etc when back in the water.
Thanks again.

Couldn't believe it when I read this tread as that is what happened to mine a year ago. So today uncovered the deck to mast connection block and found 2volts between red and screen. Should be 8v. Took the red wire out the back of the ST60 and the pin on the ST60 was delivering 8v. So ST60 Head unit OK. Took the red wire out of the deck to mast connection block and 8v was being delivered along the cable from the ST60 to the mast connection block. So cable from ST60 head unit to deck connection block OK. Went up the mast and removed the wind vane and 8v returned to the connection block. So deck to mast head cable OK. Looked at the wind vane connection on the top of the mast and pins were green so water had seeped in. Replaced with spare wind vane and all now working again. Pity really as quite got used to feeling the wind instead.......
