Hey all,
I have ST30 instruments at the moment and want to replace the small size separate speed and log with one unit. Can I unplug the ST30’s and plug the ST60 multi unit straight in?

This should then give me room to fit a ST60 wind as my ST30 wind is no longer working.

Sorry if this is a basic question but I find this whole instrument/seatalk thing really confusing.

Thanks

The ST60 will plug straight into the Seatalk bus using the same plug as the ST30 - no problems there.

However, the Multi is just a display, not a depth sounder or speed log - there is nowhere to plug actual transducers into it. If your speed and depth are getting onto the bus from somewhere else then that’s no problem, but if the ST30s are currently acting as the actual measuring instruments rather than just displays, then it’s not a suitable replacement.

Maybe look at the ST60 Bidata instead?

Pete

I will try and kick this off. Presumably you have already bought secondhand ST60 multi unit and the ST60 wind since these instruments are no longer manufactured and Raymarine have now moved on to instruments using a different communication protocol called STng ( Seatalk New Generation). Anyway assuming you have already got the instruments then the question to ask is whether the log and depth transducers ( the bits in the bottom of your hull are compatible), you will need to research this and it may take some time to get to the bottom of it. On the other hand IF you already have the 2nd hand instruments why don't you just try connecting to the transducers, more than likeley the depth will work and from what I've read the speed also but may need a bit of fettling with a diode ( beyond my capabilities !)
If you haven't already bought the 2nd hand instruments my own feeling is that you would probably do better to splash out on a set of the latest instruments and transducers and thereby move forward 30 years in one leap.
For myself I have installed 2nd hand ST60's , but only because I bought a job lot, including autopilot, for a very good price from someone who was replacing everything !,

Thank you for the swift reply’s Pete and Andrew.
Ahh so the multi is just a display, I didn’t realise that, thank you.
Andrew, I haven’t bought the ST60 kit yet. I’m looking at my best options. I very nearly bought a 70i wind speed depth kit at SBS but got put off/confused by the extra cable and connectors I’d need to get it set up. I expected to get everything I would need in the £1000 kit....
All I really want is a new wind instrument that’s better than the ST30.
I did use a B&G Triton the other week and loved that, but that looks like another world of pain.
I need to do a load of research.
Thanks again

If you need to connect log and depth to a ST60 you need a Tridata MASTER not a Tridata REPEATER. Only the master version has the inputs. As others have said a ST60 Multi is just a repeater.
