Oh heck ! boats just gone back in the water and the depth guage is buggered.... it has power but reads --- constantly... and clue's the rest of the seatalk instruments work, but no st 60 depth on the network. I've checked the connections. is there anyway of determining if its the head unit or the transducer that's buggered..... any other clues ! I'm on the boat hoping to go sailing :(

Where is the transducer? Is it through hull fitted or in an oil bath? The symbols --- are ( without going to check the manual, as I am lying in my bunk in Fowey posting this. I know, more information than you needed!) anyway the symbols usually mean 'no signal'. Check the transducer is still connected. Check it's still 'seeing' the water. Ie still in its bath of oil or stuck to the hull with its blob of silicon etc... Otherwise if the cables are all ok its time to borrow a transducer and plug it in and dangle it over the side to check which bit to replace.

You can usually tell if the transducer is working by placing a radio on the AM band next to it and you will be able to hear 'the bip bip bip' on the radio. (Obviously both the radio and transducer have to switched on!)

"it has power but reads --- constantly"

Mine does that when the tide's out and I'm on the mud.
When the sea returns it reads 00.0 and we're just afloat.

And there's the 30 metre hand lead for emergencies.

But such is the reliability of Raymarine products it pays to cultivate a local expert.

Happened to me on the old boat.

Raymarine has a useful help section on its website and also respond to questions. In my case, there were several arcane keypress operations they asked me to make, which had no effect. What did work was promoting the unit further up the SeaTalk chain. Dunno why, but worth a try.

... 'What did work was promoting the unit further up the SeaTalk chain. Dunno why, but worth a try..'

the fact that you got it working when it was positioned closer to the control head suggests that the wiring or signal to the transducer may have deteriorated over years of use.. moving the transducer closer maybe increased the signal strength or voltage available to the depth sounder.

can you get at the connections transducer-side to try cleaning them and anding some dielectric grease...

or maybe like all workers it just wanted promoted further up the sea talk chain.??
