ST60 alarm sound

I am, regrettably, of an age where through a misspent youth (too many Floyd concerts) and too many hours with noisy farm machinery that my hi-tone hearing is not what it once was. Not uncommon, many people seem to suffer the same.

Raymarine, in their wisdom, manufacture instrumentation which has hi-tone alarms. Luckily the Admiral on board has excellent hearing and prods the recalcitrant inactive deck hand at the appropriate time. Could Raymarine please design lo-tone alarms?

And has anyone else noticed the extreme similarity of the Oystercatcher call and the ST 60 alarm? Except the Oystercatcher is louder and I can hear it plainly!
 
My ST60 calls usually get past my tinnitus quite well. It can be confusing when the e7 sounds off at the same time as the Graphic Repeater. On my old R70 plotter the waypoint alarm would self-cancel after some seconds but now it only does so when it feels like it. My autopilot form the same series has a higher-pitched alarm which I don't hear so well and have trouble locating if I haven't engaged my brain.
 
If you can find (or happen to already have) an E85001 SeaTalk / NMEA0183 interface box, you can connect up any kind of buzzer or hooter you like to the "Alarm" contacts.

I’m being slow here Pete: can you elaborate? How would you get 'alarm contacts' from NMEA data, whether from the input to this box (in Raymarine's SeaTalk format) or its output (RS232)?

The box has a pair of wiring terminals labeled "Alarm". 12v appears across them when an alarm is active on the bus (some less critical alarms sound only at the instrument for 30s before the interface box comes on; depth is not among these). According to this post the output pulses at 1Hz, and there is no built-in relay so if you want a substantial klaxon you should add an external one (easy). A moderately loud piezo buzzer should be ok wired directly.

ST60 depth instruments certainly publish active alarm conditions on SeaTalk; I'm using this in my home-made depth-alarm-shutter-upper.
