Is theft of scruffy old ST50 displays really that rampant?

Is it the end of the world for you if you accidentally unlock one for a thief?

I can't see receipts working. These instruments will be 20+ years old now, and in many cases were fitted by the builder anyway. Nobody's going to have receipts, I certainly don't.

I recently bought a Raymarine ST50 Codebuster, the official device for removing the code lock. Mainly for interest, but I'm also considering an unlocking service.

What can I do to avoid being sent stolen instruments? Receipt?
I have an ST50, pray tell me to what may it be locked ?

The ST50 series included a feature whereby you could lock the instruments with a code so that they would be useless if stolen - a bit like a car radio. Possibly some people fitting them would be installing expensive electronics in the cockpit for the first time and the code system was to alleviate fears of theft.

I don't think it was widely used, and the feature was dropped in the subsequent ST60 series.

So what were they locked to ? Did they just stop working if the 12V was ever removed or something ? All my instruments have switched supplies so that would be a pain if so...

Indeed. I think the problem often arises when one instrument is removed from a locked chain, and it loses the connection with the master. There have been a few threads on this and other forums from people who have bought a locked one.
 
Not sure that you can guard against helping thieves with that sort of service. Few people will have an original receipt. A legitimate company whose receipt you might trust wouldn't be selling a locked instrument second hand. The common legitimate case would probably be that an owner has died. The best you could probably do would be to try and get to know your clients but the time you'd need to invest in that wouldn't make it a good business propsition. I was lent one by someone who knew that I'd bought my boat (and codelocked instruments) from the estate of a deceased previous owner because he'd been the broker. I keep meaning to ask to borrow it again now that I've got the facilities for seatalk protocol snooping, but then I'd have another moral dilemma: once we know how it works and can replicate it in software, should we publish it...

When they're powered up they need a 4 digit code to be input, either on the instrument head or over the seatalk network from another device. When I bought my boat the outside instrument heads were unlocked by a code sent from the multi display unit at the chart table. Obviously that meant that I was dependent on both that instrument and the seatalk bus, so I made a point of getting them unlocked.
 
I am planning the purchase of a 1996 hunter with raymarine st50 suite if instruments, all networked. the primary display or chart plotter, not sure, is missing from the boat. the instruments are all codelocked. I have tried the standard codes to no avail. I would like to buy/borrow/rent you code buster to find out what the lock code is for the instruments.

Welcome to the forum. Unfortunately, Nigel Mercer who started this thread died in late 2016 so will not be able to help you. However, someone else may be able to. I’d suggest that you start a new thread asking directly for help in unlocking Raymarine ST50 instruments as that’ll generate more interest than reviving an old thread.
 
Most marine electronics specialists will have the gadget that unlocks the ST50s. I tried to find a way to remove the codelock setting on one recently without the gadget and failed, though I did have the right 4 digit code to make the instruments work.

easy enough if you have the code to reset the network to 'no code' which I did on mine (inherited with boat) as it was a real faff entering every time power was turned off to them at the master switch or breaker. instructions are in the manual if you still have it. The real PITA is if the code was net passed on from original owner.

I had the original user manual and the code - could not set the system to "no code"...… It may be possible, but I couldn't get it to work, though the manual indicated it might. Not a terribly well-written manual.

I thought it badly written and ambiguous but tried it and it worked. chapter 5 bottom of page 24 in mine.
