To recap
I've replaced the clutch lever pin -- kit required £30+
Was gripping so new belt kit £25+

Still gripping so sent off for to Raymarine for service £160 quote

Total cost so far £55 + £160 to go

MKII wheeldrive bit (incl 25% disc) is £295 have bit the bullet, am treating £55 as sunk cost and am buying the MKII as apparently its a much better engineered bit of kit and I don't want to be spending £160 every couple of years!

The best advice is to go to Cherbourg where you can get the bits for free.

Judging by what I've heard about Jimi's heads, you're going to want to be on deck all the time anyway

Oi .. stop yittering on about my heads, I've moved on from there.. anyway the stench is from the holding tank ventilation which is above decks anyway... hence my finely honed downstairs ability ... but back to business or the elderly curmudgeonly control freaks'll get annoyed (if they ever visit PBO) what this about free bits in Cherbourg?

I had a good look at this to replace my old analogue 3000 - which is fine for a few hrs, but heats up the longer it is on. The advice I got was that this was the same problem for the 4000 - a fine piece of gear if you dont use it too much. I have bitten the bullet and bought the new S1 system (replaces the old ST5000+), which is rated for continuous use. It also has the ability to act as a secondary steering system. Dont believe the words in PBO (Dec Issue) it is not cheaper than the old ST5000+, however it is better (better control head, and heavier linear drive) The price in the mag assumes that you dont need a linear drive (i.e. your boat has hydraulic steering) .
The other advantage of the S1 is that the working parts (except for the control head) are all sited under cover - and we have all read about raymarines love for water. I got quotes from abt 15 different stores and the best was from Datayacht@btinternet.com. I was also quoted considerably cheaper by M*rin* S*per St*re at Port Solent - who then refused to honour the quote and offered me a paltry £5 for my trouble - I had spent more than that going there in fuel.
