appreciated your good comments thanks so much. Can I ask you further re Mooring size. How much allowance in breadth would you advise to provide for fenders in the overall berth size.Is there a rule of thumb for this? This may dictate the boat I can buy given the lack of availability I am finding in the ports around st maxime-Cavalaire stretch. I will start moving east next. If you have got any strong views on good boats for this area I would be grateful.I have shortlisted Carnevali,Cranchi Azimut,Sealine, Riviera, princess & Fairline so far and reading furiously!!

i refer the hon gentleman to the other thread.

To stay in st trop old port (which i am guessing is your aim) you have to buy a Bertram from the dealer in the old port. Which might be worth it. For cavalire etc you will need to conside how to get there - Ryair i think go to toulon. Or you fly yerself in a small plane perhaps?

There most certainly is avalaibility of berths in every single harbour/marina. But you will only unearth these by being a potential punter, in real life, in a marina, in a dealers shop, not just on the phone cos there are literally hundreds of dreamers.

Consider also that in Cogolin many boats are "dryberthed -even 50 footers - so stay ashore except for a few weeks a year when owner arrives.

Breadth

Don't worry (in my opinion) about breadth (beam?). With Med stern to mooring they just all rub against each other and the narrow ones and wide ones all average out. Cost is based on total length. Get plenty of fenders!! I've got 8 and could do with a couple more.

Re: Breadth

er not in france it isn't. For longterm berthing there will be rigidly determined max width of boat slightly smaller than physical width of berth to allow for fenders. There will usually also be a max permitted length.

Re: Breadth

Hmmm, seems your right. Looking though some of my old marina info there is a beam consideration. Being 11m, I fit into the 10-12m catagory (Cat H , don't know it this is a standard catagorisation for Italy) which has a max beam of 3,75 so, I'm within at 3,71.
However, this seems only a mechanism for charging, after that its just squeeze 'em in where you can!

Following on from Lord TCM's comments.

The actual parameters used verywhere in So France are ( I believe)....

Beam - take 10cms off official size for fenders. i.e max beam in 4.20m berth is 4.10m...length is +10% I understand...i.e. 15.40m in an official 14.00m berth...

easy really...

Do go further East, I really don't like Frejus or St Raphael....Frejus is a marine Butlins and St Raphael is difficult to access..apart from by Train

TCM - RyanAir used to fly to Toulon but they have dumped the route. So it's BA to Mariselle, or EasyJet to Nice - the only carrier I could find into Toulon was Air France and that was via a hop into CDG Paris first.

There is a small marina at La Ciotat which is where MV-IV will be based, assuming that the gods above my pay grade don't fire me in the reshuffle. I like Madrague too but that seems a bit bigger and less friendly. Neither would take much over a 35' anyway.
